We will be taking a short educational field trip to the Media Center at the beginning of the period. It should take about 30 minutes.

"Tone is a particular way of expressing feelings or attitudes that will influence how the reader feels about the characters, events, and outcomes. Speakers show tone more easily than writers because they can use voice tone, gesture, and facial expressions. A writer must use words alone."

Bellwork:

  • In groups of 3, draw a slip of paper containing a TONE word from the box.
  • Write a description of a dog walking in the park, conveying the attitude on the card. You may not use the word written on the card in their description.

Mini-Lesson

  • Handout Tone List
  • 1 person from each pair read dog sentence aloud.
  • Allow class to guess tone of the sentence. (Use words from the tone list.)
